Vampire Weekend is in the best kind of danger. A few weeks ago, as you know, they released the single off their new album, due out in January. Three months is an eternity online, time enough for the pile-ons to get up and move on (“Hey, Grey’s Anatomy fans! A little help!”), and while it’s probably just a measure of the new cruelty as applies to indie rock bands, that kind of attention always seems welcome, no matter whose parents are buying the tickets.
Oh, but I love those little moptops. Their songs always seem on the verge of falling apart, like the Shaggs or early Television. Nor do I begrudge them their aspirations, unlike what I read in comment threads after the first album. That they continue to drink from rivers other than the muddy Hackensack is not mere vindication. It’s a confident middle finger to anti-intellectual, anti-creative trolls everywhere.
