Tip O’Neill Was Right

November 13th, 2009 by Bruce

From suburban Kansas City, the crucible that done fired me, comes a story about a different kind of firing. Eighth-grade science teacher Ryan Haraughty was cut loose this week when a parent caught wind of an off-the-cuff joke he made at the expense of his own poor drawing skills. The situation turned surreal pretty quickly: the students rallied to his defense, in person and on Facebook, while the school board issued a tight-lipped statement and the local media were compelled to treat it as serious business.

It’s cold comfort to Mr. Haraughty, but the man of science might appreciate the fractal pattern that can apply to him: z1 = z [squared] + c, where z = doing your job, multiplied by your good intentions in doing so, and c stands for craven gestures applied by the powerful in order to appear decisive. So stand tall, Mister H. You’re in good company.
